The effect of eight weeks of bodyweight resistance training combined with propolis supplementation on serum levels of TNF-α and visfatin in non-athletic women

Abstract

Purposes:
Propolis has unique benefits as a potential new antioxidant. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of body weight resistance training combined with propolis supplementation on serum levels of TNF-α and visfatin in non-athletic women.
Materials and Methods: n this quasi-experimental study, 32 non-athletic women with a mean age of 26.71±1.28 were equally divided into four groups of placebo, supplement, exercise, and supplement + exercise (n=8). Exercises were performed for eight weeks and three sessions per week for 50 minutes. Exercises were performed for eight weeks and three sessions per week for 50 minutes. 900 mg of propolis supplement was administered daily with two meals of lunch and dinner. Data were analyzed with covariance test and Bonferroni post hoc test with SPSS 26 software at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: Paired t-test showed that serum levels of TNF-α and visfatin in the exercise and exercise + supplement groups changed significantly after the intervention (P<0.05). In terms of percentage change, the exercise + supplement group showed a greater decrease in visfatin (21.02%) and TNF-α (15.20%) than the other groups. A significant difference was observed in visfatin (P=0.001, F=11.35) and TNF-α (P=0.001, F=5.31) levels between the groups by performing the analysis of covariance test.
Discussion: It seems that taking propolis supplements along with neuromuscular exercises has an important role in reducing TNF-α and visfatin compared to taking supplements alone in non-athletic women.
